Our mission
We may not have been the first — but for more than four decades, Baywood SAR has been recognized across Virginia as one of the best small-town rescue teams in the Commonwealth.
Read our story
In April of 1983, the close-knit community of Baywood faced a heart-wrenching tragedy. From that shared grief, neighbors came together — and Baywood Search and Rescue was born.
Over the years, the need for advanced life support has grown alongside the demand for search and rescue. We have adapted deliberately, and today we proudly fill that critical gap for our community.

What we do
From advanced life support to wilderness rescue, BSRS meets the moment — whichever direction the call comes from.
Two ALS-equipped ambulances and certified providers delivering the highest level of prehospital emergency medical care to the communities we serve.
Decades of search and rescue experience built alongside teams across Virginia — wilderness searches, disaster response, and specialized rescue operations.
Born from a 1983 tragedy and rebuilt by neighbors, BSRS answers 24/7 across eastern Grayson County and the surrounding communities.
Now recruiting
Certified EMTs and EVOC-qualified drivers — and neighbors who simply want to help. There's a place on the squad for everyone, with or without a certification.
What sets us apart
Baywood Rescue relies on the generosity of community members, local businesses, fundraising events, and patient billing to support our operations — funding the equipment, training, and emergency care our community depends on.
BSRS is community-rooted — sustained by neighbors, local businesses, fundraising events, and patient billing revenue.
Our volunteers give thousands of hours and stretch every dollar of community support, keeping costs far below a fully paid service.
Baywood providers cover roughly 7,400 hours at the station each year, ready to respond.
We're dispatched to about 320 calls per calendar year across Baywood and the surrounding communities.
Service area
Our primary district is bounded by the New River to the north and west, extending southeast toward the City of Galax along Highway 58 and Meadow Creek Road, down to the Virginia–North Carolina state line.
We also provide secondary coverage to Galax, Independence, and Fries as part of mutual aid across the county.
